Vasquez Rocks Natural Area, Los Angeles, California

Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is a 932-acre park located in the Sierra Pelona Mountains, in northern Los Angeles County, California.
It is in Agua Dulce between the Antelope Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley north of Los Angeles and seen easily by motorists driving the Antelope Valley Freeway (CA 14).

The rock formations were formed by rapid erosion during uplift about 25 million years ago and later exposed by activity along the San Andreas Fault.
In 1873 and 1874 Tiburcio Vásquez, one of California's most notorious bandits, used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. His name has since been associated with this geologic feature.

The prominent rock formation has been nicknamed "Kirk's Rock" due to being featured in several Star Trek episodes, each time representing a different planet.
So if you are in Los Angeles area, it might be rather easy.. to boldly go where no man has gone before.

More recently these were in news again after The Big Bang Theory episode.

  13. It looks cool and certainly fun to get to the "edge" and the "top" of the rock formations, but I'm still figuring out how you've manage to get there? Can it be done just by climbing? Is it safe?

    1. Yeah there were many folks just climbing up but of course one has to be careful and there was a cop car too so I am assuming it was safe and legal :)

  16. Looks like a great place to have a fun day out, make a contest on who is able to climb that almost vertical rock first. I like the pictures with the parking lot, it seems to strange to see cars between bushes and rocks. It's like a playground.

  17. The views from the top must have been amazing! I love mountains and love taking pictures of them, we don't have too many in Florida so we have to take advantage of them when we are out of state. Love all your pics!
